COP2 - Politics and Society

'First Things First' by Ken Garland:

Us as art students, "the undersigned", have been presented with advertising "as the most lucrative, effective and desirable means of using our talents". Saturated with using our skills and imagination to benefit consumerism of gimmick products or products that could be harmful for people's health. "Wasted on these trivial purposes, which contribute little or nothing to our national prosperity". This is unethical and not responsible.

It will be more worth while for us to use our skills and imagination on things that can help "promote our trade, our education, our culture and our greater awareness of the world".

As a creator I too would prefer to dedicate my time and effort into creating content I'd prefer to demonstrate my skills and imagination. Creating something more enjoyable is more worth while for myself then creating content I'd rather not waste time on. Especially promoting and being responsible for consumerism of meaningless products that could effect someone's health.

'First Things First' by Adbusters:

Culture Jamming - is when you criticise advertising and consumerism in the mass media such as parodies.

Parodies are otherwise known as an imitation of something presented in a more comedic way. Culture Jamming can be shown as this to make fun of and show the absurdity of certain advertising and consumerism.

'Design For The Real World' by Victor Papanek:

The Social and Moral Responsibilities of the Designer

"The truth is that engineers are not asked to design for safety" and knowing that "our actions can make a difference".

Not a term I'd think is thought of today but we do have a responsibility for the safety of others or our clients. Designing shouldn't just be for your own visual pleasure but you must take into account what can go wrong and who it can effect. For example, when people on the Titanic were led into a false sense of security that the ship was indeed "unsinkable" caused some safety measures to slip under the radar. The Titanic didn't carry as many lifeboats as it was designed for, they removed some to free up space for the passengers. An experience aboard the "unsinkable" ship was focused on over providing more lifeboats in case of emergencies. As is evident this caused the Titanic to suffer many loss of life due to the freezing cold temperatures of the sea.

Within animation we animators have "the social and moral responsibilities" to consider many factors when presenting an animation. These include such things as age of the audience, what is socially and culturally acceptable otherwise we could end up badly influencing those who view our work (e.g. kids vulnerable to bad influences).

RSA ANIMATE: Crises of Capitalism is an illustrated talk by David Harvey who "looks beyond capitalism towards a new social order".
